What is binaural? Is it stereo, surround sound…or what?

– Strictly speaking, binaural means recordings made with a mannequin head that approximates the physical dimensions and hearing characteristics of a human being. This is accomplished by placing microphones inside of artificial ears that are part of the mannequin.

– “Stereo” really refers to any two-channel process where the signals in the left and right channels differ in some manner (though strictly speaking, this is not a requirement).

– “Surround Sound” is a technique where multiple channels (front left, center, and right, rear and side channels) are used to create an illusion of being ‘surrounded’ by sound.
